They are Not You

One thing I know for sure, there is no standard template for success. Yes, there used to be - this company, this entry level job, become good at this, make friends with that person, Bam rising up to Super Star Guaranteed. Well, that is not the case anymore. Knowing this should put you at ease.

The ease being that you are not "missing" a step. I'm not saying you don't need some guidance (Mentor and Sponsorship required). I am saying you can't listen to everyone you meet who tells you what you should do to become successful at your job. No singular book has the answer to taking your career to the next level. There just is no set path for what it is YOU want to accomplish and become.

What you can do is take from several books, vet out some of what you are being told, sit down with your Mentor and/or Sponsor and create a plan that works for YOU. The plan you follow will be unique. It will change periodically, maybe even within the same week you create it, but still even the changes will be within the goal YOU have mapped out for yourself.

You will make some missteps. The path may seem a bit unorthodox, but it will be the best plan for YOU. So, don't allow the voices that say "This is how to be a success. You MUST do it this way." talk you into a direction that leads you only to where they are or even worse farther away from where you are determined to go. Just keep doing what you're doing ..... until you see an opening to do it another way.

NOTE: There is a lot of talk about not being able to find a Mentor or Sponsor. Well, sometimes there is one right in front of you but you are allowing the idea of what one should be shadow your view.
